How to record internal audio on Android

Want your screen recording to capture the sound your phone is playing? This tutorial shows you how.

The short answer

To record internal audio while screen recording on Android — that is, the sound the phone itself plays, such as audio from a video or game sound effects — you need two things:

  • Android 10.0 or above — Google only opened the system API for internal audio capture in Android 10; older versions can't do it.
  • A screen recorder that supports internal audio — for example Kuailuping, where you switch the recording method to "Internal audio" in settings.

If your phone runs a version below Android 10, the system doesn't support internal audio recording, unfortunately. You can only record speaker sound through the microphone, which sounds worse and picks up ambient noise.

Steps to record internal audio with Kuailuping

Kuailuping is a free Android screen recorder that supports internal audio recording, and it's very easy to use:

Step 1: Download and install Kuailuping

Download the Kuailuping APK from the download page and install it. Kuailuping supports Android 10.0 and above, and the installer is about 6.3MB.

Step 2: Set the audio source to internal audio

Open Kuailuping and find the "Audio source" option on the recording settings screen. Choose "Internal audio". You can also choose "Microphone" (to record external sound) or "Silent" (video only, no sound) as needed.

On the same screen you can set the recording resolution (up to 1080P), frame rate (up to 30fps), and bitrate — choose whatever you need.

Step 3: Start recording

Tap the "Start recording" button. The system will show a screen-recording permission prompt; tap "Start now". A "Recording" notification appears in the notification shade, where you can pause or stop the recording.

While recording, the sound your phone plays is captured directly into the video, with no ambient noise — much better audio than pointing a microphone at the speaker.

Step 4: Stop and view the video

Tap "Stop" in the notification shade to end the recording; the video is saved automatically to your phone's gallery. You can also open Kuailuping's "Video library" to view, share, or delete recordings. Videos are saved by default to the Movies/ScreenRecorder/ folder in internal storage.

Need to record internal audio?

Kuailuping supports internal audio recording on Android 10+, free with no watermark, and saves videos locally.

No sound when recording internal audio? Common causes

If the video still has no sound after following the steps above, it's usually one of these:

1. The app being recorded blocks audio capture

Some video apps, banking apps, and DRM-protected content actively block the system from capturing their audio output. This is an app-level restriction that no screen recorder can bypass. Try recording another app's sound to see if this is the cause.

2. The system version is too old

Check the Android version under "Settings → About phone". On Android 9 or below, the system doesn't support internal audio recording, so you can only use the microphone.

3. The phone is muted or the volume is zero

On some phones, internal audio recording is silent when the phone is in silent mode or the media volume is zero. Try turning the media volume up before recording.

4. Bluetooth device interference

If the phone is connected to a Bluetooth headset or speaker, audio may be routed to the Bluetooth device. Try disconnecting Bluetooth before recording.

Internal audio vs. microphone recording

In short:

  • Internal audio: records the sound the phone system outputs directly, with clear audio and no ambient noise — great for games, videos, and online classes.
  • Microphone: picks up external sound through the phone's microphone, including ambient noise, but can also capture your own narration — good for tutorial voiceovers.
  • Silent recording: records only the picture with no sound, for cases where you don't need audio.

Choose based on what you're recording. Kuailuping switches between them with one tap in settings — no reinstall needed.

FAQ

Can every Android phone record internal audio?

Recording internal audio requires Android 10.0 or above. Android 9 and below are limited by system permissions and can only capture external sound through the microphone; they cannot directly record the phone's own audio output.

Why is there still no sound after choosing internal audio?

Some apps (such as certain video platforms and banking apps) block the system from capturing their audio output — this is the app's own copyright protection or security restriction, which no screen recorder can bypass. Try microphone mode, or record an app that allows audio capture.

Can I record internal audio and the microphone at the same time?

Most Android phones only allow one audio source at a time: internal audio or the microphone. Kuailuping lets you switch the audio source in settings — internal audio, microphone, or silent recording.

Where are recorded videos saved?

Videos recorded with Kuailuping are saved to your phone's local gallery and can also be viewed and managed in Kuailuping's video library. The default storage path is the Movies/ScreenRecorder folder in internal storage.
